How Do You Learn a New Skill. Take Baby Steps.

Like a baby takes small, uncertain steps while learning how to balance and eventually make it across the room, I’m taking baby steps too. Last year I made a big change. I closed a 30-year sales training and business development consultancy and launched a new company focused on copywriting and content. After three decades of doing something I knew inside and out, starting over felt both exciting and humbling.
When you’ve been in business that long, you get used to operating with confidence and speed. You know the rhythms and the shortcuts. You know exactly what you’re doing but when you are
starting something new, it doesn’t work that way.
You begin again by testing things, adjusting, trying ideas, and seeing what works. It’s slower and more deliberate, and at times, it requires a level of patience that can feel unfamiliar.
Watching my grandchild learn to move through the world has been a reminder of something simple but powerful and that is progress happens in small steps. Babies don’t rush the process. They wobble, fall, get back up, and try again until suddenly one day they’re confidently making their way across the room. That’s exactly what building something new looks like too and what we, adult professionals, should be doing as well.
Instead of expecting immediate perfection, I’m allowing myself to move forward step by step, learning along the way and getting more confident with each new client, project, and opportunity. If you are new to writing content, give yourself some grace. The entire concept of putting your thoughts into words can feel overwhelming.
Repeat after me: baby steps. They’re how you get where you’re going.
