Many people ask me how they can find the time to do their writing especially if they are entrepreneurs that are tasked with doing most “everything else” in their business. For the business people that find writing a less-than-pleasant task, the ability to find the time and energy to create their content is even more problematic.
I understand and as a person that juggles a slew of business commitments each day, I feel your pain. Here are some of the things that I do that seem to work for me and maybe they will work for you too.
Schedule the time to do your writing
Let’s face it if you’re like most business people you’re not going to miraculously find open time slots during the day, or at least not very often. Remember that creating content is an ongoing initiative and not a one-time event and so you must carve out time on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to put the time on the calendar and just like you wouldn’t ignore an appointment with a client or prospect, you shouldn’t ignore this appointment with yourself either. The amount of time will be contingent on the volume of required writing and the time it will take you to complete it. The key though is to make this a commitment that you will keep.
Find the best environment to do your writing
In this case, one size does not fit all. Some people like to write in a lively and loud environment and find that coffee shops, malls and parks suit them just fine. Other people need the quiet and solitude found in a library or office and work best when totally alone. Don’t force yourself to do your writing in a place that doesn’t suit your style. Instead, make the effort to do your writing in an environment where it comes most easily to you.
Write what you are most comfortable writing
Are you a great short-form writer but find that white papers and lengthier content is a problem? Can you create articles for newsletters but doing the content for websites is much more problematic? Focus on what you are good at doing and outsource the rest. There’s no need to force yourself to write something that you aren’t good at when there are scads of resources from which you can choose. It takes much more time when you have to struggle to write the piece so give that stuff up.
All of us get the same 24 hours each day. It’s how and where you choose to use your time that can make all the difference in what you can accomplish
